JUSTICE DONOVAN delivered the opinion of the court:

Following a jury trial in Madison County, the defendant, Chester O'Quinn (defendant),was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to an extended term of 70 years'imprisonment. On appeal to this court, defendant argues that (1) he was denied the effectiveassistance of counsel and a speedy trial when defense counsel continued his trial for morethan 3
